OVERVIEW
Racetalk fosters an enjoyable atmosphere for runners by enabling them to share their real-time running progress, simulating the feeling of running alongside fellow users.
My main focus was to create a tailored user experience that encourages active participation in physical exercises with incentives to your community, turning it from a chore to a joy.

PROBLEMS
DEFINING AND COMBINING THE ISSUES
01
“How do I help our planet to be greener?”
“Exercising is boring”
02

Everyone is aware of the worsening global warming, but many aren’t aware of what steps to take to help our planet become greener. How can an ordinary individual do so without any experience?
Exercises, as many are aware, are an essential steps to a healthier lifestyle. Smart watches track and share health datas with their friends, but how can we make the interaction more interactive?
How might we bring out an application system where we combine the issues of helping the environment of the planet while maximizing exercises for the users?

LEARNING AND FIGURING OUT HOW TO BRING OUT A SOLUTION
USER RESEARCH
To gain better insights and refine the focus on the stated problems, I conducted interviews with 10 college students across different majors about their lifestyle patterns with fitness and their attitudes towards living sustainably.
INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
6 out of 10 respondents stated that they prefer going to the gym with someone compared to working out alone.

People want to live sustainably, but the instructions are unclear. On the other hand, people know they can exercise on their own if they wanted to, but would much rather workout with someone.
In light of these insights, I explored viable ways to merge working out together with living sustainably. Recognizing that exercising leads to a healthier lifestyle, I posit that aligning that to a healthier planet makes logical sense.

SOLUTION
Racetalk will give users a platform to workout and connect with other fellow users while the accumulated steps will add plants to a community garden in hopes to take a step towards a healthier planet.

SKETCHING FRAMES WITH KEY FEATURES
To bring the idea into reality, I sketched some of the frames with key features that the app needs. I explored various fitness and social applications to ideate various layouts to display the solution.

Real-Life Community Garden?
On the bottom of the user’s garden progress, there is an option to check out the location of the community garden in real life.

For days when the user wants to exercise alone, there is a walk tracker for walks without another user. At the end of the walk, the app displays a summary of today’s workout.
The user can invite a racetalker if they change their mind midway. There is also options to set goals or check out stats from their past activities.
Similar to a walk tracker, walkie-talkie tracks the steps of the user and displays the summary of today’s workout. However, the user is connected with other racetalkers to walk together. Users can check out the profile of the other racetalkers, but cannot befriend them to keep anonymity.
MY ACTIVITY
The “stats” option will take the users to this page where the user’s activities along with their weekly recap and summaries are listed.
SETTING
Users can edit their profile that will be displayed when other racetalkers open your profile.

AFTERTHOUGHT
Since it is difficult to align schedules with friends to workout together, I have always wanted an option to do so without the hassles of planning. On top of that, wanting to live more sustainably while not knowing how to was something that bothered my mind. Creating this project in hopes to bring it to reality one day was delightful.
Some thoughts I had looking back on this project is...
-
having the chance to curate a design from user research to create a product the target audience would want
-
getting further feedback from users to figure out what may need to be tweaked to be better as a product if I was given more time for this project
