AFTERTHOUGHT
OVERVIEW
Grocery Assistant helps shoppers reduce anxiety and save time while in line** by utilizing real-time stock data of grocery items.
I aimed to seamlessly incorporate user research, drawn from genuine persona interviews, into crafting an interactive interface.
** keep in mind that this was during peak COVID-19 time where stores had population limits

PROBLEMS
FIGURING OUT THE CORE ISSUES BEFORE IDEATION

01
Possible anxiety from not being able to get what they want or need

Forgetting products they need because it went over their heads
02

Getting bored and leaving the line because the wait is too long
03

UNDERSTANDING THE USER PERSPECTIVE
USER RESEARCH
To further analyze the problems and understand the user perspective, I decided to ask six respondents a few questions.
What is your personal limit of waiting?
How long is the longest the user has waited in line for?
What does the user mostly think about while waiting in line?
What is your most memorable line experience.
INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

clarissa n. (19)
“I start taking mental notes of what I want while waiting”

esther o. (20)
“honestly I can wait for almost 2 hours if I am alone”

jonathan e. (26)
“the wait didn’t feel long because I loved the place”
Almost every respondent mentioned that they started pondering about what to get or do after and would wait for a maximum of 2 hours depending on the situation. They found it the most memorable when there was something they were looking forward to.
INTERVIEW INSIGHTS
01
Explore ways to avoid their boredom
since it is easy to get bored from repetitive practice, I must figure out how the users can feel that their time was worthwhile.
since users may leave if they aren’t entertained, they would need a way to distract their minds.
Have something to look forward to throughout the line

RESEARCH TAKEAWAYS
SOLUTION
Many individuals enjoy searching for the comfort of their minds through their phones. Something that they can spend their time in or organize their thoughts in a simple way.
This inspired me to explore ways to enhance the line experience, making it more efficient and enjoyable, rather than feeling like a chore.
The Grocery Assistant will assist users waiting in line to be a less anxious time by letting them keep track of products in their grocery list they need while being able to check the availability in the store they are located in with a little surprise along the way.

AFTERTHOUGHT
During the pandemic period, I always dreamt of having an app as such in order to make waiting in line just slightly less tiring than it would be. This has pushed me to want to transform this silly concept of a virtual grocery assistant into reality.
Some thoughts I had looking back on this project is...
-
conducting interviews and creating user personas helped with further developing user research skills.
-
the battle between simplicity and decorativeness to make visuals easier to the eyes.
